What we have heard: Wolhyang has a strong reputation no matter who we talk to as having top grade, fresh makgeolli and good quality food. Being located in the Hongdae area, it seems it doesn’t have the same high-brow atmosphere as some of its more famous counterparts (Chez Maak, Moon Jar, Maakholic) but it also reportedly doesn’t skimp on quality. Wolhyang comes listed as one of CNN’s 5 best makgeolli bars, with the big surprise being that they offer take-out bottles and food. It is one of the most well-known and highly reputed makgeolli bars around, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait for a table…or think ahead and make a reservation!

What we have heard: Maakholic is on the upscale end of makgeolli bars, specializing in hard-to-get kinds of mkageolli and also champagne. Being in the neighborhood of apgujeong/cheongdam it has a reputation for having premium quality ingredients for food and top notch makgeolli. They also claim to be specialists in makgeolli cocktails, a claim also made by some of its rivals (Chez Mak, Moon Jar). A number of people have recommended Maakholic for its comfortable atmosphere, and the patio looks like it would be ideal in the summer.

What we have heard: ChezMak is an upscale ‘Contemporary Korean Dining Bar’ that is listed as one of the ‘3 Trendiest Makgeolli Bars in Seoul’ by Mnet’s Enewsworld (alongside Moon Jar and Cheongdam (1) Mak). It’s what you would expect from a makgeolli bar in Garusu-gil, and they have a wide selection of makgeolli cocktails and fancy dishes. Our recommendation mentioned that most of the cocktail combinations were very sweet.

What we have heard: Mowmow is new on the scene in premium makgeolli, and it also offers some pretty fancy makgeolli cocktails. It has a more modern interior and the menu has classics such as pajeon and ddeokbokki, as well as some other fusion plates. The interior looks open and comfortable with a lot of windows. We’ve heard that the food is amazing and the makgeolli is of excellent quality, though there have been reports of shaky service.
