Thoughts: Nestled a few blocks from the Han river near Sogang University (서강대), this quaint neighborhood makgeolli bar is a great place to sit down and enjoy a bowl of house made makgeolli, sample some delicious Korean (한우) beef dishes, or sip on a glass of scotch. The owner is proud of his food and drink, and everything from the makgeollli to the food is of a very high quality.

Dr Lee's Sindong - Dr. Lee

What Mamas & Papas liked: The grilled beef. Hands down, all of the mama’s and papa’s raved about it. Dr Lee's Sindong - Beef JeonOne papa described it as “heaven on a June day.” Many of our reviewers agreed that it was the “best anju ever!”

What Mamas & Papas didn’t like: The green bean jeon. Dr Lee's Sindong - Bean JeonThe mama’s and papa’s agreed that the Jeon was too neutral of a flavor, and that it needed an extra zip, despite its healthy appearance and crunchiness, they were turned off by the dish’s blandness and size.

Recommendation: If you are in the neighborhood for a little more upscale gastronomic experience with a nice house made makgeolli, this is definitely the place to come. The house itself is reminiscent of a Japanese style noodle house, with a large horseshoe shaped bar and kitchen occupying a majority of the space inside. It’s ideal for groups of 2-4 people.

How to get there: Dr. Lee's Sindong - OutsideAt Daehung (Sogang University) station, come out of exit 3 and head right toward the corner. At the corner, you will take a left. Walk down this street for three big blocks. You will cross two intersections with lights. Once you come to the third intersection, don’t cross. Instead, hang a left. (You’ll know you’ve come to the right intersection if you see Shin Seok (신석) Elementary across the street.) Walk down the street for about 100 m. You’ll be able to see a GS service station, as well as a church steeple as you pass by. The house is on your left, and once you see the sign, come on in!

This location is smaller makgeolli house, but it is just so inviting.  The servers and workers were all very friendly.  There were makgeolli bottles lining the windows, which of course, isn’t so uncommon, but it was awesome!

We only had our cell phones, but tried to get some shots so you knew what to expect :)What Wang Min and Monica liked:

We loved the open, but private environment.  There are two main areas, which are divided, but not closed off from each other. The first area is for traditional floor sitting, but has some western comfort as there is a hole or dip for your legs!  The second area is like an indoor patio.  There are three small tables lined against the big open windows where you can sit and enjoy the breeze or people watch!  We only had one order of anju (안주) from the menu, but it was phenomenal.  The tofu that came out with our bossam was so silky and fresh.  All of it was great and the food going to other tables also looked delcioius.

What Wang Min and Monica didn’t like: There are only three tables available to sit near the window.  Each of those tables are small and any more than 2 or 3 people is quite a squeeze.  This house has two locations, this one in Sinchon and one in Hongdae.  We were told that location in Hongdae is not so quiet, it’s larger and busier feeling…so almost a whole different restaurant.  We are curious as to which one is better!

How to get there:

Go to Sinchon station, take exit 3 and follow the road.  When you get to the 2nd set of lights (a 4-way intersection with Uplex), do not cross the street, but turn right.  Walk about 5 minutes (give or take a couple) and on your right there will be a small parking lot.  Look up and you will see Makgeolli Sangdong.  Go around the back and upstairs to enjoy.
