Thoughts: An upscale venue in the midst of Apgujeong, Kaemi Jip fuels its customers with refreshing house brewed makgeolli, expensive food, and a fast paced atmosphere in the setting of a concrete bunker. The prices don’t necessarily reflect the quality of the food, but you definitely get your money’s worth on the interesting makgeolli infusions that are made on site. It’s a true reflection of the Apgujeong lifestyle with its high prices, trendy young crowd, and scotch infused makgeolli cocktails.

What Mamas & Papas liked: The makgeolli. Gaemi Jip JeonThe house made makgeolli was absolutely delicious, and reasonably priced. Their infusions of makgeolli with citron, as well as with the scotch set a new bar for makgeolli coctails

What Mamas & Papas didn’t like: The food prices.Gaemi Jip Dong dong Ju Be prepared to shell out around 30,000 W per dish. Even for that price, the portions were relatively small. Mamas & Papas also found it difficult to talk in the loud and boisterous smoke-filled atmosphere. The dongdongju was also disappointing. One mama wrote that she thought it was mislabeled.

Mama Julia’s Note* Dong-dong ju is notoriously ill defined. This is true in English and in Korean, and the long story short is that nobody truly can say with any authority what dong-dong ju is as yet.  Sometimes you will see it served as a clear liquid like here, more similar to Cheongju/Yakju, and other times you will see it appear more like makgeolli but be a bit stronger.  Message of the story, prepare for the unexpected.

Recommendation: This place is great for a smaller group who wants to enjoy some fresh brewed makgeolli in the midst of trend setting Apgujeong. It would be a perfect stop before a night out on the town, while kicking back and listening to throwback music from the ‘90’s.

Gaemi Jip OutsideHow to get there: Come out of Apgujeong Station (line 3) Exit 5. Walk straight, following the main road for quite a while, 7 blocks, until you see the Shinhan Bank in a grey brick building on your left. Take a left, and walk about 100 m until you see a CU. It’s right next door.

Thoughts: Nestled a few blocks from the Han river near Sogang University (서강대), this quaint neighborhood makgeolli bar is a great place to sit down and enjoy a bowl of house made makgeolli, sample some delicious Korean (한우) beef dishes, or sip on a glass of scotch. The owner is proud of his food and drink, and everything from the makgeollli to the food is of a very high quality.

Dr Lee's Sindong - Dr. Lee

What Mamas & Papas liked: The grilled beef. Hands down, all of the mama’s and papa’s raved about it. Dr Lee's Sindong - Beef JeonOne papa described it as “heaven on a June day.” Many of our reviewers agreed that it was the “best anju ever!”

What Mamas & Papas didn’t like: The green bean jeon. Dr Lee's Sindong - Bean JeonThe mama’s and papa’s agreed that the Jeon was too neutral of a flavor, and that it needed an extra zip, despite its healthy appearance and crunchiness, they were turned off by the dish’s blandness and size.

Recommendation: If you are in the neighborhood for a little more upscale gastronomic experience with a nice house made makgeolli, this is definitely the place to come. The house itself is reminiscent of a Japanese style noodle house, with a large horseshoe shaped bar and kitchen occupying a majority of the space inside. It’s ideal for groups of 2-4 people.

How to get there: Dr. Lee's Sindong - OutsideAt Daehung (Sogang University) station, come out of exit 3 and head right toward the corner. At the corner, you will take a left. Walk down this street for three big blocks. You will cross two intersections with lights. Once you come to the third intersection, don’t cross. Instead, hang a left. (You’ll know you’ve come to the right intersection if you see Shin Seok (신석) Elementary across the street.) Walk down the street for about 100 m. You’ll be able to see a GS service station, as well as a church steeple as you pass by. The house is on your left, and once you see the sign, come on in!
